truffle shuffle 8.22.08 – “worked over by the boss” mix

August.22.08

while i’d love to promise you a full review of springsteen’s set at the sommet center last nite, it just isn’t gonna happen. here’s the quick sum up: the show was amazing. from the opening moments when bruuuuce exhorted the crowd like a pentecostal preacher, whipping them (us) into a frenzy, to the closing strains of “dancing in the dark,” the e street band proved why they’re the best bar band in the world, flexing their collective muscle for just shy of three hours. somewhere in there, nils absolutely destroyed (in a good way) a few guitar solos, max threw in some wicked fills and chops, the big man did his thing, little steven played the role of confidant/sideman to a “t”, and garry tallent (the tennessee tornado) kept things moving on the bottom end.

we got home after midnite, exhausted but fulfilled, and today my ears are still ringing. i like to think of it as “extending the concert experience”…

speaking of extending the concert experience, here’s an extended version “springsteen only” truffle shuffle:

1. reason to believe – nebraska (seen it live twice, acoustic in atlanta and in pittsburgh)
2. thundercrack – tracks (box set) (a jersey only setlist inclusion)
3. state trooper – nebraska
4. darkness on the edge of town – darkness on the edge of town
5. meeting across the river – born to run
6. its hard to be a saint – greetings from asbury park
7. empty sky – the rising
8. mary queen of arkansas – greetings from asbury park
9. darlington county – born in the usa (saw it live in pittsburgh last year)
10. blinded by the light – greetings from asbury park
**the encore**
1. kitty’s back – the wild, the innocent, and the e street shuffle
2. working on the highway – born in the usa (pittsburgh)
3. livin’ in the future – magic (pittsburgh)
4. into the fire – the rising
5. you’ll be coming down – magic
6. the rising – the rising (pitt & nashville)
7. adam raised a cain – darkness on the edge of town (i wish)
8. my father’s house – nebraska
9. american skin (41 shots) – live (i’ve played this on stage with some personal legends and heroes)
10. badlands – darkness on the edge of town (pitt & nashville)

quick note for holly: you like the boss, you just don’t know it yet.

truffle shuffle – “hit by a bus” mix – 8.1.08

August.1.08

so long july, hola august. is it just me, or has 2008 been happening in some sort of parallel universe where 1 day equates to 1 week?

i, for one, am thrilled that july is gone and that august is here. june was a crappy month. july was marginally better. august, however, is bwe’s birthday month, and is also the start of the school year, meaning that the gym should get back to being busier and more (fingers crossed) more profitable.

i worked roughly 110 hours or so last week. i’ve worked a lot this week. i also drank too much last nite. those three things have tag-teamed against me to make me feel like i slept under my car last nite. so, i’m hoping that the next ten songs bring me soothing, calming, happy thoughts (and make me feel a little less like throwing up).

here’s the shuffle…

1. ego tripping at the gates of hell – the flaming lips (yoshimi battles the pink robots) (a good start…)
2. i don’t wanna hear it – minor threat (first two 7″s) (the title couldn’t be more appropriate. hangover+minor threat = cruel and unusual punishment)
3. when it’s love – van halen (best of, vol.1)
4. blue veins – the raconteurs (broken boy soldiers) (i feel like jack white looked when he went gonzo on this song during bonnaroo a few months back)
5. monkey man – toots & the maytals (20th century masters) (reggae is always a good choice for recovery music. i also feel like a monkey’s been banging coconuts on my head all morning)
6. rocket queen – guns n’ roses (appetite for destruction) (i wonder if slash ever felt this way…)
7. the sound of sinners – the clash (sandinista!) (now this is funny…)
8. void – the mary onettes (the mary onettes) (also on the list of hangover music…new wave. although i wish this were a slightly less frenetic song. is that the right word? holly?)
9. AFK – pinback (summer in abaddon) (summer in abaddon…morning in agony)
10. rainy night in soho – matthew ryan (matthew ryan vs the silver state) (what a perfect 10th song. one of my favorite artists, covering one of my favorite bands (the pogues), the singer of which (shane mcgowan) is a raging, slobbering drunk. consequently, this is one of the sweetest, most heartbreaking songs that i have ever heard)

now, where’s that tylenol?
