truffle shuffle – 6.29.07

June.29.07

happy friday kiddos! mine’s been a busy week for certain, what with the deer hitting incident, the poison ivy/rash/unknown malady that most certainly is leprosy, all the things going on with the predators, and all of the great records i bought this week. oh, and i bought a brand spanking new canon digital rebel xti camera last nite.

we’re going to dinner with friends tonite, and will hopefully go see psycho at the belcourt tomorrow nite (yikes!). my pop’s coming up from texas for a few days next week, so i’ll probably spend at least a little time making sure we’re ready for the visit. oh, and i’m sure i’ll be taking some photos.

have a good weekend. feel free to speculate on the psychology of the shuffle.

1. secret heart – feist – let it die
2. treat her like a lady – the temptations – 20th century masters
3. happenstance – newton dominey – good morning sunshine (i hate it when this happens)
4. where are my panties – outkast – the love below
5. walking after you – foo fighters – xfiles soundtrack
6. worlds apart – bruce springsteen – the rising
7. forget the flowers – wilco – a.m.
8. soul shake down party – bob marley – songs of freedom (disc 1)
9. little deuce coupe – the beach boys – endless summer
10. stuck on you – elvis presley – elvis: 30 #1 hits

(all this new music on the digital record player and none of them show up in the shuffle…bizarre)

reset button?

June.26.07

i don’t want an easy button. i want a reset button. a running list of my day so far (which is not yet 3 hours old):

-woke up late.
-discovered bug bites that had previously been at “nuisance” status increased somehow overnite to “ohmygoshmakeitstop” status.
-hit a deer on my way to work. just barely – i can’t see any damage to my car – but still.
-found out that an account that i was given at work has decided to leave us. they’re a large account, and it’s an account that i didn’t ask for, and that i didn’t make really any money off of, but whose revenue i’ll have to replace.

if you hear something on the news about a piano falling out of nowhere to land on a saturn wagon driving down maryland way at lunch, or a tornado that reached into an office building and pulled out one worker, or flying monkeys that came and carried off some random dude, chances are i’m involved.

sheesh.

truffle shuffle – 6.22.07

June.22.07

it’s casual friday here at (insert name here), and that’s a good thing, since i woke up late and am so exhausted that i’m almost dozing off here at the desk, seriously considering ending my three week caffeine hiatus. be strong, young climber, be strong!!

speaking of climbing, i did eleven routes last nite. and not just eleven wussy routes, either. i did what’s called a pyramid, where you climb four routes at an elevated warmup difficulty, three at a comfortable difficulty, two just below your peak and one at your threshold. combined with a cool down route and a couple of extras thrown in, i did eleven yesterday (and could’ve done three or four more).

i don’t know about you, but my weekend’s all booked up: sleeping in tomorrow (first time, long time), going to flugtag, birthday party in the evening. then church sunday, the parade of homes deal in hendersonville and a dinner party sunday nite. rest while you can, campers!!

here’s the shuffle…have a great weekend (and see you at flugtag)!!

1. rick nelson – lonesome town
2. the buggles – video killed the radio star
3. the shins – gone for good
4. minutemen – one reporter’s opinion
5. bob marley – acoustic medley (kind’ve a demo thing off of songs of freedom)
6. wilco – i am not willing
7. john coltrane – love
8. the black crowes – just say you’re sorry
9. otis redding – i want to thank you
10. bruce springsteen – empty sky

crumbs and leftovers

June.19.07

that’s what i’m hoping to get from the table of frank black fans: crumbs and leftovers. i know i’m coming to the party pretty late, but honeycomb is fantastic. even at a low, work-friendly volume, i can tell it’s one that i’ll be playing for a long time.

other records that i’ve purchased in the past 3 weeks that i’m currently enjoying:

-wilco, sky blue sky
-feist, the reminder
-jason collett, prodigals
-camera obscura, teenager
-cary brothers, who you are
-johnny cash, live at san quentin (legacy edition, 2 discs with a dvd of the concert as well. wahoo!)
-kaiser chiefs, yours truly, angry mob
-paul mccartney, memory almost full (i’m really excited about this one, but haven’t listened to it yet. it’s next after frank’s done.)
-traveling wilburys, the traveling wilburys collection (it’s easy to forget how great those records were/are)
-vince guaraldi, a boy named charlie brown (i know it’s lightweight jazz, but damn it’s good)

no, i haven’t hit the lottery, i downloaded half of this stuff through emusic. i’d recommend you do the same (and that, if you sign up, you let me be your referrer…we both get 50 free tunes!).

what have you been listening to that’s knocking your socks off?

(ps – i’m working on booking a couple or three shows this summer. it’s been a long hiatus, but i’m ready to get back in the saddle. keep your ears peeled and your eyes tuned.)

truffle shuffle – 6.15.07

June.15.07

seems about all i have time to do now is tell you guys the ten songs that roll across the ol’ ipod every friday morning.

you know what’s awesome about 8a work meetings on friday? nothin’. wanna know what’s awesome about having to be at work at 7.30 to make sure you’re not late for the 8a meeting on friday? leaving at 4.30 to go to home depot to spend the $100 gift card you won at the meeting for being the top sales producer last month. free toy friday!!!!

going climbing at foster falls this weekend. i’ll be leading my first 5.9 climb saturday, so i’m trying to psyche myself up for it. i’ve set a goal of leading a 5.10 climb by the end of the year, so i’m back on circuit training, climbing every route i can get my hands on at the gym (7 or 8 of them last nite) and am trying to lose 15 pounds by september (hauling 185 pounds up a wall is way easier than hauling 200).

i’ve had a pretty killer week – in a good way. been reading some self help and “life direction” type books about what to do when i grow up & how to get my cholesterol down, i climbed pretty much like a ninja on tuesday and thursday nite, i won $100, i’m climbing on saturday, and i get to go to memphis on sunday for father’s day. hot dawg!

so that’s my friday and my weekend. here’s the truffle shuffle:

1. it’s expected i’m gone – the minutemen – double nickels on the dime
2. in the street – big star – #1 record/radio city
3. hard knock life – jay z – (don’t know the record)
4. 7 deadly sins – traveling wilburys
5. women & men – josh rouse – under cold blue stars
6. mansion on the hill – bruce springsteen – nebraska
7. we don’t care – kanye west – the college dropout
8. the drugs not working – ryan adams – rock’n'roll
9. go tell the congregation – the black crowes – by your side
10. mockingbird – ryan adams & the cardinals – cold roses (disc 1)

eh. nothing spectacular. well, nothing that i’m going to disclose to the world anyway. enjoy the weekend…

we’re number one!!

June.15.07

apparently that’s the message that the hamas folks want you to remember, as evidenced by this picture:

we rule.

c’mon, mister hamas. don’t you think it would’ve been better and more authoritative to throw up a fist, or even to cross your arms? maybe you could’ve put both hands on your rifle? nope, you went with the old standby familiar to sports fans, frat boys and cheerleaders all across the country, “we’re number 1.”

i expected more from you, you crazy religious militant extremists. try harder next time.
