move along, nothing to see here…

May.31.09

seeing as how i now have a blog over at the crag’s website, it doesn’t make much sense to worry about updating content on two sites. so, i’m going to quit trying to post here, and just post at www.cragcoolsprings.com (click on “newton’s blog” in the menu”.

adios, amigos.

new climbing video

April.24.09

a few months back a bunch of guys from the crag headed out to stone fort/little rock city down around chattanooga for a day of bouldering and bravado. stone fort is one of the best bouldering areas in the southeast, and is a great example of how climbers and the general public (in this case, golfers) can co-exist happily. climbers check in at the pro shop when they get there, can buy chalk and tape, even grab a (free) cup of coffee, and head out to the boulder fields. when your day’s done, you can grab a beer or soda, hang out on the back porch and talk trash about who weenied out, who has the worst footwork, or who has to drive next time.

truffle shuffle – 4.11/12.09 – curses & clues mix.

April.12.09

sorry for the lack of updates & posts. no excuses, just laziness. things have been good, although tonite i’m sitting here watching numb3rs on cbs.com, drinking lynchburg’s finest and missing my family. i guess the timing on that could be worse; my brother now lives in nashville, and my pop’s coming to visit next week. maybe its just mom i miss. anyway, figured i’d fire up the itunes jukebox and see what it spit out.

happy easter all around. if you read this, i hope you get the miracle you’re looking for.

1. slave driver – bob marley (songs of freedom disc 2). one of my brother’s & my favorite musicians. good times.
2. revolution rock – the clash (london calling). the father of reggae followed by the guys that put the punk into reggae? i love it. i don’t care if wil thinks joe strummer was an a-hole. he’s still my hero.
3. natural mystic – bob marley (songs of freedom disc 3). are you kidding me? 15 gb of music & i’ve had 3 reggae songs in a row. definitely a natural mystic in the air…
4. radio silence – elvis costello (when i was cruel). “something cheaper than passes for free speech will have to do.”
5. factory – the boss (darkness on the edge of town). any shuffle that includes the boss is a good shuffle.
6. descending – the crowes (amorica). no shit? this is the best shuffle ever. “have mercy baby, i’m descending again.” possibly my favorite crowes song ever. amazing piano finale. renaming the shuffle as a result.
7. three or four – the new pornographers (twin cinema). well i’ve certainly had 3 or 4 tonite. buh dum psh.
8. the e street shuffle – the boss (the wild, the innocent, the e street shuffle). “dressed in snakeskin suits packed with detroit muscle”. i wish i was as cool as bruce.
9. new york city serenade – the boss (the wild…) 2 songs, back to back, off the same record, out of 2854 songs. love it. “no she won’t take the train”
10. love is new – broken social scene presents brendan canning (something for all of us…). a sexy fun song to drift off to sleep to.

good night moon.

truffle shuffle – 3.6.09 – “the shuffle rides again” mix

March.6.09

i promise i’m trying to keep the cobwebs off this here blog. thing is, i’m focused on the crag’s website, on twitter marketing, and on umpteen other things at the moment. BUT, i have 12 minutes until a software vendor calls me for a demo, and its friday, so…its truffle shuffle time!

the week’s been epic, in a good way. business is pretty good, life is pretty good, and i’m even thinking i can get back on the bike a couple of days a week. as you can see from yesterday’s posts, i’ve been in a musical mood (not musical like south pacific, musical like enjoying music) this week as well.

good weekends to all…hope to see you at the crag soon!

1. the race is on again – yo la tengo (i’m not afraid of you and i will beat your ass). love it.
2. you’re missing – springsteen (the rising). well, she HAS been out of town since wednesday…
3. life itself – springsteen (working on a dream). apparently we’re gonna have a springsteen thing this week. and that’s different, how exactly?
4. shakedown on 9th street – ryan adams & the cardinals (ryman auditorium 8.1.06). one of bwe’s favorite songs, from one of my favorite shows. sweet.
5. i for an i – derek webb (the ringing bell) “an i for an i never satisfies…”
6. how we operate – gomez (how we operate). another band that i somehow forget about until they pop up randomly. “turn me inside out & upside down, try to see things my way…”
7. brain of j – pearl jam (yield). a clever song from an underappreciated record. “the whole world will be different soon…the whole world will be relieved”
8. trophy wife – the national (sad songs for dirty lovers). just got this ep, and haven’t heard the song before. sorta sounds like the national meets pete yorn. speaking of pete yorn, i hear he has a record coming out…
9. surprise, surprise – springsteen (working on a dream). no…don’t need any more surprises for a little while. unless it involves someone giving me a bunch of money to buy new flooring for the crag.
10. when i was a young girl – feist (let it die). were this a song by siouxse & the banshees, it would be much, much scarier. still, pretty intense…

so, we started with a race and ended with the plague. umm…

the joys of skype

March.6.09

bwe’s in atlanta until sunday at a conference, so we decided to give skype a try. normally, when one of us is out of town, phone calls are a drag for the first couple of days as we go from “leaving the gym, be home in 30 minutes, yes i can run by the store” conversations to longer, more in depth “how was your day/recap” conversations.

skype fixed that. i’ve been using skype with my webmaster for a couple of weeks to make things easier on collaboration, but bwe had never really seen it (except on oprah. oprah could endorse cat shit as an exfoliant and people would go for it!). once we got past the initial coolest-thing-ever stage, conversation was good, mostly normal, and even productive. i’m shopping for health insurance, as well as plane tickets to houston and boulder, and was able to do all of that without having to mess around with moving windows or anything like that. the skype window stayed right on top, so i could still look up and talk “to” her without having to go through the whole, “hang on, lemme get the window pulled back up, crap i minimized it” thing.

so, if you’ve got friends or family in far and distant lands (or texas), get hooked up with skype. its free, easy to use, and pretty damned cool.

over & out. gotta go find some cat shit…

not gone, but forgotten.

March.5.09

in the past couple of days i’ve accidentally stumbled across a bunch of late 80′s/early 90′s music that i’d forgotten about. does that ever happen to you? here’s what i’ve “discovered” this week:

- counting crows – recovering the satellites. remember how bad ass this record was/is? no? listen to it again.
- u2 – joshua tree. how i keep forgetting this record is a mystery.
- stone temple pilots – purple. actually, most of their records are way better than they get credit for.

what are the bands, records or songs that you forget about, but then always turn up when you hear them, or that send you back to the stack of old cds?

questions & ideas & observations

February.20.09

been busy today trying to pick up a severance check, deposit said check, and meet with a marketing consultant. still, i’ve had some randomness bouncing around in my noggin that i wanted to toss out to the masses:

-if you’re the parent of a young child, what sorts of things do you include in party favors for birthday parties? how much do you typically spend on that type of stuff?
-does nashville have a parent/teacher store?
-as a non-fan of checking the weather, does anyone know if this niceness is supposed to be sticking around?
-been letting my hair grow out just a little bit. have a haircut scheduled for next thursday. any ideas on a style (no afros)? i tried the madmen slicked back thing. not for me. i’ve done the mohawk, the “european crackhead” look, and now have sort’ve resigned myself to looking disheveled, with varying degrees of effort put into style. i’m open to considering anything…except afros.
-is m.i.a. really awesome, or do i just think she’s awesome because its different?
-does it mean i’m getting old if all of a sudden my idea of good working music is opera, or does it just mean i’m around music 12 hours a day?
-if you’re doing a direct mail campaign, wouldn’t you check to see if you were mailing stuff to a business or home address? yes, i’m talking to you mr. real estate agent that always sends me mail.
-what color is the new black? it was red for a few weeks, pink for a few weeks, now what?
-how does one go about divesting himself of about 60 cubic yards of gravel?
-how much variety does an 8 year old want in a twice-weekly climbing program?
